NEWS: OUTCOME OF MEETING WITH GCCC MAYOR TOM TATE | Dog Friendly Society – Australia UPDATE

Dog Friendly Society – Australia – News Update from Trevor (Founder)

NEWS: OUTCOME OF MEETING WITH GCCC MAYOR TOM TATE:

Dog Friendly Australia

Hi everyone, we just want to say a big thank you to Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate for taking the time out to meet with us today, and to pass on to everyone the very good news so far (more to come).

1 – DOG FRIENDLY ALFRESCO DINING ALLOWED ON GOLD COAST:

It turns out that regardless of the federal or state regulations & legislation, it is up to the local councils as to whether or not they enforce rules… and so the previous vote by council which we all heard of a few weeks ago, means that the GCCC have decided not to enforce this rule; and what this means is:

A – There are NO MORE FINES TO BE ISSUES TO CAFES OR RESTAURANTS WHO CHOOSE TO ALLOW ALFRESCO DOG-FRIENDLY DINING;

B – It is the venue owner’s choice as to whether they allow it or not, and under what circumstances, and;

C – Regardless of what the choices, rulings & enforcements are in any area or venue (Gold Coast or elsewhere) you are still liable for your pet through such legal principles as Tort of Negligence, and laws such as Reckless Endangerment… so the onus of responsibility is where it should be, on the pet owner to be responsible & to know their own pet.

Dog Friendly Society (Australia)’s advice

:A – Train your pet !

B – Know your pet !

C – Don’t take risks with your pet & with others. If you are at anytime unsure how your pet will react, do the responsible thing & err on the side of caution 🙂

…so this is a big win for common sense, and Tom said that he is already going to a cafe himself with his own dog.

Always your own local cafe/restaurant whether or not they allow it 🙂

* NOTE TO READERS from Vanessa (Owner of Gold Coast Pet Sitting aka Gold Coast Pets) — I am involved in a small way with DFS for the above (the dog friendly cafes/restaurants). Thus please feel free to contact myself as I  plan with the help of the public and DFS Australia to come up with a definitive list of “dog ok” cafes and restaurants.

2 – DOG FRIENDLY SOCIETY EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Dog Friendly Australia - Gold Coast Chapter

Mayor Tom Tate was very supportive of our group’s aims & objectives, and he has now put us on to another councillor to speak to next… so we should be able to get resources together in short order to start hosting the small & large events we have begun planning… so please, if you are interested in getting involved & helping out, let Trevor or Jane know (the DFS page owners), because we will certainly need all the help we can get.

A – We want to have people meeting on a regular basis at cafes to make friends, socialise your pets, have a coffee, share information, and perhaps go off to a park before &/or after coffee to practice dog training tips & tricks… we will do our best to provide resources to these regular meet ups as soon as possible. This is a great way for dog groomers, trainers, minders, walkers, and others who work in the pet industry to connect with pet owners… all we ask is that you remember DFS itself is commercially neutral, and we want to support everyone to be a better dog owner, trainer, carer, or whatever your interest is.

NOTE TO READERS from Vanessa:  I have offered the I LOVE DOGS meetup group to be a facilitator of the above as it is something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile now. I’ve been wondering how to do something social for pet owners (or dog owners in this particular case) to come together socially AND promote the wonderful GCCC “Get Out & Active With Your Dog” days.   Thus stay tuned !!!

B – We want to begin organising a regular major event, which will still be very low key, grass-roots, and non-commercial… the idea is to be free entry, cheap BBQ for the family, subsidized dog-training (to make it cheap or free if possible), and get elderly folk outdoors for a pleasant day of sunshine, fresh air, community, food, and playing with, patting, and/or being licked by well mannered & well trained pooches.

EVENTS FOR OTHER DOG FRIENDLY SOCIETY LOCATIONS (Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Darwin, Perth, etc)

If anyone from DFS Brisbane, Sunshine Coast or elsewhere (even someone wanting to start a new DFS group for their own area) is interested in hosting such minor & major events, please get in touch with Trevor or Jane & we will work with you to make it happen.

NEW DFS GROUPS: If you are interested in starting a new DFS group for a new location anywhere within Australia, or if you are wanting to help admin an existing one, please again get in touch with Dog Friendly Society – Australia.

…so we will have more news to follow soon on work with the GCCC… but a few more notes before I sign off:

DFS WEBSITE UPDATE

NetRegistry have very kindly donated to us 2 years worth of free web-hosting for our own website, so we have a bit of design work & development to do… but if you know someone who is a good web-developer, we can use some help with this for sure… and once it is up online, we will be better able to raise money, organise events, and deliver products & services to all of you who love your pets or work already to deliver pet related goods & services.

INCORPORATION, DONATIONS & SPONSORSHIPS:

We need to get some money together for the cost of incorporation as a registered tax-exempt charity… our long term aim is to be financially independent & to even provide financial support to other animal welfare groups… and we have a plan as to how we can achieve this… but at first, we need your help… so if you can donate, or pass on our message to others who may be able to, please do… the donate button via PayPal is on the Dog Friendly Society Australia page (http://www.facebook.com/DogFriendlySociety.Australia).

DOG FRIENDLY SOCIETY GAME:

Jane & myself have designed a game for everyone (kids, families even adults!) based around dogs.  We will soon start a crowd-funding project for it on www.pozible.com to get the money to get it off the ground… so if know of anyone whom works in the games industry, this maybe of interest to them please pass on our details… we will donate some of the profits from the game if successful to DFS.

More news soon… we hope this has put a smile on everyone’s face 🙂

Have a great weekend Dog Friendly Society!!
