Hi Vanessa, thanks for your recommendation recently for the gentleman who recently lost his pet. Thought it was timely to post some tips for dealing with grief when losing a pet…

  • Acknowledge you are grieving for the loss of a special & beloved member of your family
  • Don’t try to ‘play down’ your feelings, such as saying to yourself “it was only a dog, why am I so upset?”
  • Consider keeping momentos of your pet, or do something in their honour, such as planting a tree
  • Don’t suffer in silence! If you need to talk to someone about your loss, but feel no-one understands, then a caring professional such as Nadine at Pawsitive Psych Solutions in Oxenford can help. Nadine is a passionate animal lover who has experienced her share of pet loss, but is also a registered psychologist who specialises in pet loss & grief.
  • Consider the stages of grief: shock/denial, anger, guilt, bargaining, and acceptance (some also add in depression to these stages). If you don’t understand them, please see a professional who can assist through this grief
  • Gratitude – make a list of all the things you DO still have and are grateful for. These could be things such as “I am grateful that I have the capacity to love another animal and offer it a wonderful life”.

Hope these help……please don’t hesitate to contact Nadine at Pawsitive Psych Solutions in Oxenford (07 5502-6529) or on Facebook – ” Pawstive Psych Solutions ” if you feel you need help throughout the grief journey 🙂

Note from Vanessa (Gold Coast Pet Sitting) ~  These apply to pet care professionals as well. Do not suffer in silence.  You are not alone in your grief when a client’s pet transitions. Talk with other pet care professionals as well as contact Nadine.
