Christmas Dangers for Your Pets – A must read for all Pet Parents and their visitors !

I know we all love our pets and are eager to share this special day with them but please think twice before you share all that Christmas “cheer” (and ensure your guests/visitors observe this as well) –

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:

Often sweet attracting dogs and cats, but can cause serious and fatal intoxication. Instead, opt to buy your dogs “doggie beer” if you want to share a drink with your best mate.
– AVOCADO

Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known Persin. The Guatemalan variety is most toxic – but all have toxic toxic potential. They cause vomiting/diarrhoea – primarily
gastrointestinal distress.

– CHOCOLATE

Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic.  Opt to use carob treats if you want to share some chocolate-like goodness with your dog.  Chocolate ingestion can sometimes be fatal.

– COFFEE (ALL FORMS)

Coffee contains dangerous components called xanthines, which cause nervous system or urinary system damage and heart muscle stimulation.

– FATTY FOODS

The primary concern here is gastrointestinal upset – and in some cases Pancreatitis. This can be fatal in some pets – and is almost always triggered by a high fat meal, such as gravy or bacon.

– MACADAMIA NUTS

Contains an unknown toxin and can affect the digestive, nervous system and muscles of dogs. This can lead to paralysis.

Pets will develop anaemia. All dogs recover when stopped from ingesting

– RAISINS/GRAPES

As few as 6 grapes have caused kidney failure.

– YEAST DOUGH

Rises in stomach causing gastrointestinal distress bloating and signs of alcohol toxicity.

– XYLITOL

This is found in a lot of artificial sweeteners. Some of the signs of toxicity include in-coordination, collapse and seizures sudden drop in blood sugar.
-NUTMEG

High levels can be toxic or even fatal.  Some of the signs and side effects are tremors , seizures, nervous system abnormalities or death.

– APPLES, APRICOTS, CHERRIES, PEACHES, PLUMS

They contain a cyanide type compound and signs of toxicity include apprehension , dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, hyperventilation and shock. The seeds and stem contain the toxic ingredient not the fruit itself.
